Contest and exhibition: (CLAN)DESTINO – Milan Design Week 2001
4 - 9 April 2001
Identity changes related to mobility
Clan(destino) is an exhibition that brings together some of the most interesting exponents of young contemporary design. The idea was to gather varying points of view, ways of doing things, characteristic visions and cultural differences all based on the same theme.
The title of the exhibition, clan(destino), is linked to the idea of getting designers to compare a contemporary issue, inviting them to look closely at changes in identity linked to mobility, where people do not belong to just one place, and the role that design has to play when it comes to creating new ideas, solutions and lifestyle scenarios that are more coherent with this reality.
So, the idea of clan(destino) is linked to the idea of comparisons: among designers, cultural and social perspectives and personal identities, where diversity and dialogue form the basis for the way they look at things.
Projects:
KLEENSEX®
ANA MIR PRIETO
Kleensex® are disposable pocket wipes for personal hygiene purposes within the world of prostitution.
Kleensex® are made out of a very light, thin and soft material (100% polyethylene)* which, when folded up can easily be popped into your bag or pocket.
Kleensex® are ready-to-use and offer clean protection against unhygienic beds (or other surfaces). After use, just throw them away.
Kleensex® come in a variety of different colours.
*Polyethylene is recyclable.

IMMIGRANT CHANCE
CURRO CLARET MARTÌ
A computer game about immigrants and the homeless. The game simulates what happens to an immigrant when he/she arrives in a western city. Players have to meet the immigrant’s needs (food, sleep, survival…) bearing in mind all the difficulties that they come across (they have no money, they don’t know anyone, they don’t speak the language and they have to face a lot of prejudice from the locals…).

BAMBOO
FABIO BORTOLANI, PIETRO SILVA
Just flowers.
Give everyone some lovely flowers, reusing existing materials, namely industrial tubes, that have been modified with a little welding and punching.
The tubes can be cut into different lengths and then hung from the ceiling or put on the wall.
Give flowers, fragrant flowers.

CORNICE
FABIO BORTOLANI, PIETRO SILVA
A table without a top.
Objects can only be put along the edge of an empty and undefined space, which has many uses.
Plants, delicate objects, kids.
An object which, at first, seems absurd, but which is something we can all find a different definition or use for.

TABLE
ILKKA SUPPANEN
A table for temporary situations.
For today’s nomads.
Lightweight and transportable, it is easy to both put up and dismantle.
The surface treatment on the table top, a decorative grille-effect created by alternating shiny and matte lacquering, marks out handy spaces for storing and organising objects and documents.

DUTCH DETAILS
MARRE MOEREL
Ceramic tiles depicting masterpieces from the 17th- and 18th-centuries.
Breasts – an expression of beauty and fertility with an explicit sexual content – and big ruffs worn by women – an expression of upstanding behaviour.
The tiles represent the duality of human nature. There’s always more than one meaning, you never know what’s hiding behind the façade.

EXTRABASIC, INTERACTION
MARTIN RUIZ DE AZUA
“Equal” represents a change in values for a hoped-for future where humanitarian aid is transformed into social justice.
“Equal” is the logo for extra-basic products.
“Interaction” cushions.
Everything we do has an effect on other people or the situation as a whole. Two inflatable cushions, joined together at the top. Everything that happens to one of them is passed on to the other.
For dancing or playing with: they improve personal relationships.

TUBO CLANDESTINO
N2
Not just a “pipe” dream
Geographic distances seem to be getting closer and closer; mobility is the key word in contemporary life.We are travelling much faster and further away. The surroundings rapidly change and we try to get used to this new reality.
However, the world within us, in our minds, seeks other dynamics, other boundaries, other horizons. The destination of these ”journeys” is often unknown. The routes we take are confused, winding and complex. In our thoughts we are often “clandestine”, always on the look-out.
We are faced with unknown territories, which we don’t know how to tackle, even when we are “forced” into a 1.6-metre pipe.

TAVOLINO A SOSPENSIONE
PAOLO ULIAN
Functional clandestinity.
A suspension lamp made out of Murano glass which, thanks to a hooking system, can be lowered to floor level and used as a handy well-lit side table.
If necessary, it can be returned to the ceiling again, so freeing up the space below.

PAGINA
PAOLO ULIAN
Tiles for public toilets.
A blank canvas that clearly encourages all WC writers out there to ‘pen’ their inevitable “underground” masterpieces.
Happy writing!

EQUA
TIZIANO BONO
Mechanical clandestinity.
Thanks to a “clandestine” mechanism, that moves about inside the object, a light source can be positioned at any height along the transparent stand.
Two balanced cylinders of the same weight make up the lamp.

USB
WALTER BECCHELLI
A game of mirrors for reflecting on the intrusive pervasiveness of a glance, uncontrollable and destabilising, which dissects our image and only partially recreates it in different contexts.

PLYWOOD CLIP PROJECT
MARCO SOUSA SANTOS
Designed by craftsmen, Clip is an anonymous and clever object.
The Clip Project pays homage to craftsmen and their dedication to design!
