Contest and exhibition: WATER – Milan Design Week 2003
9 - 14 April 2003
Water.
A resource that is thought to be inexhaustible, cheap and a given right.
In reality, more than 4 billion people in the world do not have access to running water.
Food for thought.
All this makes us think that, in the future, even industrialised societies will find themselves having to solve the problem of managing water resources due to climatic change and a lack of attention to our natural heritage.
The existence of water, both on Earth and in Man, is a fundamental part of every vital function. This water-dependency for every life form, leads us to think that design could help towards finding, if not the complete solution to the problem, then at least a greater awareness of this valuable resource.
The exhibition consists of about ten projects by Italian and foreign designers who came up with sound solutions for raising people’s awareness when it comes to using water in our everyday lives.
The thing that characterises the exhibits on display the most is the careful simplification of the design elements.
A conscious decision, an adequate response to the ever increasing complexity of the world, resulting in the creation of minimal interventions, be they playful or conceptual, that suggest a particular use or function instead of imposing it.
