Contest and exhibition: UNDER 35 - Salone del Mobile 2001

4 - 9 aprile 2001

We have recently selected the projects that will participate in the Opos Under 35 exhibition. After ten years of competition, we have long questioned the validity of our initiative. Not to question the value and seriousness of our choices, but to verify their ethical content.
Is it still right to promise young people a future as designers? Is there really room for them?
In a strange harmony with our assumptions, the projects presented this year share a sensitivity and delicacy, with products that are careful not to invade an already saturated system, ideal surfaces for small signs of improvement.
Under 35 still makes sense: it offers an alternative, a message of quality.

Design: FILOMENA
Project: Gergely Agoston
Wall lamp.
The project involves simple elements, freely available electrical components.
The wire, usually annoying, becomes the main focus of the design process, thanks to the insertion of a steel rod.

Design: RADIO
Project: Francesco Argenti, Donata Paruccini
A compact-sized radio which, thank to the plug positioned on the back, can be inserted in the socket directly.
Designed for the bathroom, it is suitable for any place where the use of devices with battery or power- chords would be unsafe or uncomfortable.

Design: LAUNDRY BAG
Project: Francesco Argenti, Donata Paruccini
Bag made out of two fabric rectangles, one rigid and the other elastic, attached to the wall with two snaps.
Full of clothes it increases in volume revealing its content. Once detached, it can be put in the washing – machine together with the clothes.

Design: BIANCA
Project: Lorenzo Damiani
Bianca è una lampada da appoggio o da parete.
Bianca is a counter- top- lamp or a wall-lamp. It can be used virtually everywhere in the house, both floor and counter- top
configurations are allowed, when used as a wall- lamp it can be easily detached and moved.
The peculiar feature of this object is that ,on its upper part, it hosts a socket, either for the electric current or for the phone, and the on/off switch : it could be called a luminous multi-socket.
It happens often that a mobile socket is needed… to attach the phone to recharge, for the lap- top or other things.

Design: MY CIGAR TALKS TO ME !!
Project: Ernest Perera Duran
Nice Cylinder filled with tobacco, with a lung measure printed, standard cigarette holder and 30 minutes less of life.
Nice Cylinder filled with tobacco, with a minute measure printed, standard cigarette holder and 30 minutes less of life.
Nice Double Cylinder filled with tobacco, double standard cigarette holder and 30 minutes less of life. To share with your partner, if you have one.
Silver ashtray with sharp points around the perimeter, making holes each time the cylinder is left on it. When it’s perforated the nicotine increase is regulated in each time the person smokes.

Design: SCOTCH – METRO
Project: Emmanuel Gallina
A mixture of tape measure used by architect and tailor and an adhesive tape, this hybrid (in putting together two different functions) object tries to disturb our eyes accustomed to normality.
It wants to give a new sense and a bit of fantasy to a banal object.
When using biadhesive tape, often a precise measurement is needed.
With the measures printed on it, it becomes easy to cut the tape to the required length.

Design: HOOK ME UP
Project: Marc Krusin
“Hook me up”, designed to generate a more efficient use of high spaces for clothes storage, is made of a hook and a ring which are united by an elastic cord and are to be used in conjunction with a normal coat hanger. To store away clothes, one pulls a cord attached to the ring thus lowering it to a sufficient height at which to hook up the coat hanger. Once “hooked”, the user lets go and the ring and coat hanger return to the previous height. To access clothes again one simply repeats the motion.

Design: GOTA
Project: Gerard Sanmartì Sellès
A watering can for domestic use which doesn’t waste space when is not being used.
One of this special features is that it’s made of cardboard and polypropylene plastic.
Its low cost and the fact that it’s easy to imprint on its surface makes it interesting to sectors such as presents and promotions.

Design: TEN CLEAR BOTTLES
Project: Damian Williamson

It’s a luminous object. When it’s on, it creates a safe and pleasant atmosphere in the room. The water has an important role in exalting the light,
spread by an electro-luminescent stripe.
