Exhibition: CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE

27 November - 18 December 1993

In-depth seminar: December 11-12

The OPOS space in Milan, staying true to its mission of promoting new generations in the fields of design and artistic research, has organized the exhibition CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE – Experiences and Research of the New Generations.

This initiative has created an opportunity for dialogue and debate around the most significant architectural works built in Italy, ranging from territorial scale to exhibition design, while also highlighting the design research of emerging architects.

Curated by Giampiero Bosoni, the exhibition is the result of an in-depth investigation into the design and construction reality of young Italian architects. The central theme, further explored in the accompanying seminar, aimed to examine the complex relationship between the real-world architectural project and the ideal, experimental nature of design research—an often challenging balance to achieve.

For this reason, the exhibition presented a selection of architects considered representative both for the quality of a completed project and for the relevance of their design research. Each architect was showcased with one built project and one project that remained on paper, providing material for reflection on the state of contemporary architecture in Italy and the design trends of both the current and future generations.

Supporting Giampiero Bosoni in gathering information and conducting the initial critical analysis of the architectural landscape under investigation, several young architecture critics—mainly editors of specialized publications—collaborated on the project. These critics also participated in the exhibition with their own panel, where they presented their perspectives as privileged observers through texts and images.

The selection of architects exhibited resulted from a consultative process between Giampiero Bosoni and the invited critics, which was then discussed and refined by a study group within the OPOS space.
