Concert: Li-Chin Li, Federico Calcagno, Yang Haoyuan

29 January 2026

On the evening of January 29, 2026, OPOS hosted a public concert dedicated to sound research and contemporary music, marking the final outcome of an intensive workshop taking place earlier the same day.

The concert represents the public presentation of a research project involving Li-Chin Li and a group of composers selected through an open call held between November and December 2025. During the day, behind closed doors, the in-person workshop focused on direct exchange between compositional practice, instrumental experimentation, and electronic sound, laying the conceptual and sonic foundations for the evening performance.

The concert program unfold in two distinct parts.

The first part will feature:

Vox I (2020)
for 37-reed sheng and electronics
by Heng Chen
Li-Chin Li – sheng

Vox I is the first work in a series composed for sheng and electronics. Derived from the Latin word vox, meaning “voice” or “sound,” the Vox cycle explores the fusion between the instrument’s organic resonance and an electronic sound field. In this piece, techniques such as glissando and portamento play a central role in shaping its musical identity. In the final section, the solo sheng gradually dissolves into the electronic texture, merging with the surrounding sonic environment.

The second part of the concert is devoted to an improvisation performance:

Free Improvisation (40–50’)
New Trio
Li-Chin Li – sheng
Federico Calcagno – clarinet
Yang Haoyuan – electronics / no-input mixing

This newly formed trio brings together three distinct sonic practices rooted in improvisation, extended techniques, and real-time listening. The performance unfolds as an open-form exploration of timbre, interaction, and emergent structure, shaped by the acoustics of the space and the performers’ moment-to-moment decisions.

The concert at OPOS thus stands as the concluding moment of a shared process of work and research, offering the audience the opportunity to experience the outcomes of a creative process developed over the course of an entire day.
