Competition and exhibition: UNDER 35 - Salone del Mobile 2002
10 - 15 April 2002
Opos returns in April 2002, during the Salone del Mobile, with the usual Under 35 event.
Now in its twelfth edition, the competition increasingly reveals its own design identity, which over the years has taken on a precise character—focused on small-scale, ethical design, attentive to the signs of time and change.
For this edition, participants were required to follow specific guidelines regarding the packaging dimensions of their proposed objects, once again emphasizing the need for rational projects, stemming from a deep reflection on today’s manufacturing realities.
0.25 m³
This represents the maximum volume the object, when disassembled and packed, must not exceed.
This limit was the constraint set by OPOS for this year’s participants in the Under 35 exhibition-competition, encapsulating our vision of design.
Folding, packing, and transporting are fundamental yet often overlooked aspects of an object’s design. This constraint aims to direct designers’ attention to themes such as the ecological disassembly of objects, their lightness and compactness for advanced logistics, and performance qualities related to the innovative use of materials and construction solutions.
The Opos Under 35 jury selected 13 projects. The prototypes were exhibited, as usual, during the Salone del Mobile in Milan from April 10 to 15, at the venue on Via Ermenegildo Cantoni 3.
The selected products cover a wide range of types and atmospheres. They range from the irreverent idea of Rosaria, a rosary made of bubble wrap, to No Stop Rack, a rigorous shelving system designed with strict functional flexibility in mind. Between these two extremes, there is room for everything: from the Etichetta Caduca, a clothing tag that detaches simply by pulling a thread, to the CD02 cup, which presents an innovative take on a traditional object like the espresso cup.
ETICHETTA (CADUCA)
Alessandro Casinovi
Labeling system useful for sealing and giving an aesthetic impression to a collection of clothes designed, manufactured, and marketed periodically under the same name or brand.

FLUIDFURNITURE (Morphing your environment)
Hannes Koch
A mass-produced piece of furniture that can be customized not only in color and texture but also, and above all, in shape.

HANGER
Miguel Cabra Apalategui
Hanger for hanging T-shirts and “ironing” them while they dry.

HOT POT
Nicola Del Lungo e Francesca Taddei
Porcelain container for food that has the property of maintaining a constant temperature.

JOSEPH
Carlo Trevisani
Centerpiece-coin tray.
BLACKOUT
Lorenzo Damiani
Table/portable lamp made of steel and plastic in various colors.

LIGHTCRACKER
Leonardo Rossi
Table lamp consisting of two polycarbonate cylinders that join together to form a single element approximately 25 cm long.

NO STOP RACK
Andrè Reutter
Unique shelving system: a simple, sturdy, and economical structure made of 4 x 6.5 mm panels.

RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN’
Ernest Perera Duran
Cooking dish with a folded section so that it can be easily dried in an upright position.

ROSARIA
Andrea Maragno, Sonia Tasca e Vanni Bozzato
Rosaria is a disposable rosary made of multiball (LD polyethylene). It consists of 54 air bubbles divided into 5 groups of 10, each separated by a bubble.

SOGNO DEL SUONO
Hemon Alexandra
Audio speaker to be connected in the traditional way to hi-fi equipment.

TAZZA CD02
99IC
Ceramic coffee cup with a “hole around it.”
When the perforated saucer is lifted, the cup fits into it, creating a stable equilibrium (with the center of gravity lower than the point of application of the external lifting force), which is more suitable for environments with high mobility (bars, motorway service stations, etc.) or without appropriate support.

UP-DOWN
Emmanuel Gallina
Up-down takes on a social role when several people gather around the illuminated table. It creates the opposite atmosphere when the light fixture is raised, becoming a luminous “guèridon” and making the environment perfect for solitary reading.
