Immersive audiofiction: RADIO LSD - Albert Hofmann’s trip
5 December 2025
OPOS hosted, at its headquarters, the first public presentation of RADIO LSD – Albert Hofmann’s Trip, a live immersive audio fiction by Flavio Stroppini and Andrea Manzoni, featuring Daniele Ornatelli, with sound design by William Geroli, produced by Francesca Giorzi and Thomas Chiesa, who supports audio production for RSI.
The event is the result of the creative team’s artistic residency at OPOS.
On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Albert Hofmann, the renowned Swiss chemist who first synthesized LSD, the Audiofiction department of Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana (RSI) presents a one-of-a-kind listening experience: RADIO LSD, a sonic journey blending science, vision, and imagination.
“After the Apocalypse, a radio broadcasts the sounds of a vanished world.”
Thanks to the use of the Neumann KU100 binaural microphone, the audience—wearing headphones—was immersed in a three-dimensional sound environment where words, music, and effects surrounded the listener, creating a total sensorial experience.
Supporting the narrative, original music, field recordings, sound-design vinyls, and magnetic tapes intertwine into an acoustic tapestry that evokes the collective memory of a lost humanity, suspended between hallucination and poetry.
RADIO LSD – Hofmann’s Trip will be released on January 12, 2026, as an audio fiction distributed on the channels of Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana and on major online listening platforms.
“It is very dangerous to lose contact with living nature.”
— Albert Hofmann
Flavio Stroppini and Andrea Manzoni reunite to present this new project. In 2022 they created Like a Dog Without a Bone, a tribute to Jim Morrison that won the Grand Prix Nova, the most important international competition dedicated to binaural works. Stroppini and Manzoni have collaborated for years between theatre and radio, developing a hybrid and contemporary language that merges words and sound into ever-new perceptive experiences. Joining them is actor Daniele Ornatelli, performer in dozens of Stroppini’s audio fictions, and sound designer William Geroli, whose work spans electronic music, soundscapes, and acoustic experimentation. Thomas Chiesa supports the production as technical assistant, while Francesca Giorzi oversees production for Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana – Audiofiction.
Synopsis: On the morning of April 19, 1943, Albert Hofmann synthesized LSD. At 5 p.m., he began to feel as if he were drunk and decided to ride his bicycle home. During that now-famous ride, the symptoms became much more intense. His “first trip” is the opportunity to narrate the unstable era we are living in. Alarms echo. Our planet pitches, staggers, breaks apart, founders. What time will the end of the world arrive? According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago, which since 1947 has been assessing how close humanity is to destroying the planet through its own technologies, we are 89 seconds from Apocalypse. For the protagonist of RADIO LSD – Albert Hofmann’s Trip, the Apocalypse has already arrived. He is alone with his memories, fears, and hopes, inside a bunker. No signal from the world he once knew, except for the intermittent interference of a peculiar radio station.
RADIO LSD is a work that tells the story of a journey within ourselves and through the world we inhabit. It is a cry to warn us that our world is sinking.
