Book presentation: HYBRID CREATIVITY - Author and worker in the age of intelligent machines

21 March 2025

On 21 March at 7.30 p.m., the presentation of Paolo Dalprato‘s book, HYBRID CREATIVITY – Author and worker in the age of intelligent machines, was held. Simone Aliprandi and Francesco D’Isa discussed the text with the author.
During the evening, it was possible to interact with the installation YOU ARE MAKING ART by artist Andrea Meregalli, a work that closely dialogues with the history of interactive art and the concept of image as technological unconscious.

HYBRID CREATIVITY – Author and Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines deals with the arrival of generative artificial intelligence and how it is profoundly changing the way artists, photographers, graphic designers and creative people work. The rapid evolution of generative AI is in fact making it necessary to fully understand the dynamics that are redefining the creative process itself. This meeting aims to help understand how to manage this transition, showing through real examples how to enhance human creativity through the conscious use of artificial intelligence. A stimulating reflection for artists, professionals and enthusiasts.

The book is developed in two complementary parts that always maintain a strong link to everyday practice. The first analyses how the creative process changes concretely when generative AI is used, exploring the new dynamics that emerge between the human mind and artificial intelligence. This analysis gives rise to the concept of the ‘hybrid author’, a new figure representing this synergy. The theory is interwoven with real-world examples, ranging from Refik Anadol’s artwork to AlphaGo’s Go games, showing how this collaboration is already producing innovative results. The second part examines how legal systems around the world are dealing with these innovations, through the analysis of recent court rulings that are defining the contours of this new creative reality.
The text is aimed at anyone working in the world of images and visual creativity: photographers, artists, graphic designers, but also legal professionals interested in the legal aspects of these innovations. The aim is to provide practical and conceptual tools for understanding and making the most of the potential of these new creative tools, with a focus on concrete applications in everyday work.

Andrea Meregalli’s installation YOU ARE MAKING ART is activated through simple but essential interaction with the public. It consists of a generative AI platform programmed by the artist and associated with a pedal-operated camera that constantly produces new artistic portraits of the viewers, mixing in works by the artist himself, invested with the dual role of spectators but also of proponents of the creative process. The installation was exhibited in Venice during the exhibition Scoletta dell’arte: digital reform promoted by TAEX from April to September 2024, in conjunction with the 60th edition of the Art Biennale, and at the MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan during the exhibition AI Yoga for Artistic Intelligences promoted by Lenovo in October 2024.
